Historic First Training Launches Special Olympics Judo Team in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A historic moment for sport in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place in Doboj, where the country hosted the first official training session of its Special Olympics judo national team.

This milestone marks the beginning of structured development for inclusive judo, opening doors for children and young athletes with intellectual disabilities to participate, grow, and compete in the sport. Around a dozen young athletes took part in the training, supported by multiple judo clubs from across the country.

Leaders in the initiative emphasized that this is more than just a sporting event—it represents progress toward a more inclusive society. The program aims to provide equal opportunities while using judo as a tool to build confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging.

The training also sets the stage for a major international event: Sarajevo is scheduled to host the Special Olympics Judo Open in 2026, bringing athletes, coaches, and supporters from around the world.

This development comes as part of a broader global push to expand inclusive sports, supported by cooperation between international judo organizations and the Special Olympics movement.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, this moment represents something powerful—a step forward not only in sport, but in values. It highlights a growing commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and recognizing the potential in every individual.
